This gala will spotlight the amazing story of Dr. Henry Dodford Dismukes, an African American physician in Kimball, West Virginia in the early 1900s. All funds raised at the gala will go directly towards rehabilitating the building that previously was the Henrietta Dismukes Nurses Home and has fallen into disrepair after decades of vacancy.

​The Dismukes Project Learning Tour provides a unique experience to learn more about Black history and experiences in the coalfields of Appalachia, while also learning the incredible story of Dr. Henry Dodford Dismukes. Dismukes was an African American physician in the early 1900’s, that founded the largest privately owned Black hospital in the country for its time.
