On a cold, snowy afternoon in mid-December, warmth wasn’t found in the weather but in the laughter, shared stories, and connections that filled the Community Room at 50 Kent Avenue, home to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) and the Circle of Friends (COF) program. Participants, volunteers, and staff of COF came together for their annual Christmas party, a celebration of friendship and resilience for those navigating the transition from homelessness to stable housing.
Guests were greeted by the comforting glow of a virtual log fire on the big screen. The room was alive with the hum of conversation, the clinking of plates filled with hot and cold treats, and the calming presence of Star and Lucy, two therapy dogs from St. John Ambulance. These gentle companions, alongside their handlers Gillian and Rebekah, provided comfort to guests who might find social events overwhelming.
Stories of Transformation
For Ava, one of the first Circle of Friends participants two decades ago, the program holds a deep significance. She shared her journey of moving from Mary’s Place shelter into permanent housing, reuniting with her children, and starting anew. “The support I received from Circle of Friends changed everything,” she reflected. Now, Ava remains connected to the program, encouraging others to embrace the hope and community it offers.
Tim, another participant, shared his gratitude for the relationships he’s built through the program. “The regular meetings gave me a sense of belonging when I needed it most,” he said. His warmth and humor lit up the room as he playfully bantered with a COF volunteer, a testament to the deep bonds that form between participants and volunteers.
Jason attended with his young daughter, Taylor, but not as a participant. After sharing his own lived experience of homelessness, Jason was invited to volunteer with COF, offering his unique perspective to those just beginning their journey. “It feels good to give back and show others that they’re not alone,” he said.
The Power of Volunteers
Volunteers Louise and Hilda exemplify the program’s heart. New to Kitchener-Waterloo, Lois discovered COF through a volunteer listing and felt drawn to the opportunity. “Helping people at such a pivotal time in their lives is incredibly rewarding,” she said. Watching Louise and Hilda engage with participants, it was clear their energy and dedication were deeply appreciated.
Noman, COF’s Program Associate, is a newcomer to Canada himself, and he finds joy in helping others transform their circumstances. “It’s special to celebrate Christmas through the eyes of the COF community,” he said.
“For many, attending a social event like this is a significant step,” said Claire, the program team lead. At the same time, Claire reflected on those who weren’t in the room. “While we celebrate the successes represented here today, we’re deeply aware of the many individuals and families still experiencing homelessness. This party reminds us of the work that still needs to be done and the importance of growing our Circles so that more people can experience this sense of belonging and hope.”
A Shared Story of Hope
The original Christmas story is, among many things, a story of a family seeking refuge. This is a narrative familiar to those in the Circle of Friends program. Like Mary and Joseph, COF participants know the challenges of finding a safe place to call home. Through the support of dedicated staff and volunteers, many have found hope, belonging, and a fresh start.
As the party wound down and the room emptied, the warmth lingered—a reminder of the strength of community and the profound impact of walking alongside one another through life’s challenges. At its core, the Circle of Friends program is about more than housing; it’s about building relationships that transform lives.
