Dismukes Project - A history in media
Renovation progress & next steps
Thanks to generous support from donors, MCC has recently completed critical exterior renovations to the historic Henrietta Dismukes Nurses’ Home, ensuring the building is ready for the next phase of renovation - a full rehabilitation of the interior of the building.
With your continued partnership the interior renovations will soon become a reality. Once fully rehabilitated, the Nurses’ Home will be repurposed as a community learning center.
Community Learning Center
As proposed by our community steering committee, the Nurses’ Home will be repurposed as a community learning center. The center will offer classes that include, but are not limited to, technology and literacy education, canning, gardening, sewing and cooking. Tutoring opportunities for local students will also be available. These classes will be led by members both inside and outside the community.
The building will also preserve and share the history of the Henrietta Dismukes Hospital, along with other Black medical history from the area. By highlighting this underrepresented history, the learning center will invest in community development, offer educational opportunities and create an additional space to celebrate McDowell County’s heritage.
Dismukes Fundraising Gala and other activities
We continue to honor and share Dismukes history through efforts such as installing historical markers and hosting Dismukes Day. We are currently sharing this history with others and gathering supporters for the project.
Each year in August we hold our annual Dismukes Fundraising Gala in Welch, West Virginia. Funds raised at this gala go directly toward the Dismukes Project.
Thank you!
Thanks to your passion and support, the exterior renovations of the Henrietta Dismukes Nurses’ Home are complete. What a blessing it is to see this historic space being restored! But the journey isn’t over yet.
With your continued partnership—whether by attending our annual Dismukes Fundraising Gala or giving toward this project—the interior renovations will soon become a reality.
Your commitment helps ensure that the Nurses’ Home will emerge as a vital community resource and a living testament to the work and spirit of Dr. Henry Dodford Dismukes for years to come.
