A spiritual covenant with Churches and First Nations

Adrian Jacobs, Manitoba, Turtle Island (Canada)

This document outlines the concept of establishing a "Spiritual Covenant" between churches on the Haldimand Tract and Six Nations. The idea emerged from a 2007 conversation at the Haudenosaunee Council meeting, where Rick Hill , Haudenosaunee knowledge keeper and artist, suggested that churches acknowledge Six Nations' jurisdiction over their lands and pay a token lease as a gesture of goodwill. The covenant would allow churches to continue their spiritual work while recognizing Six Nations' rights, and upon decommissioning, the land would revert to Six Nations for community use. It calls on churches to lead by example in seeking justice and reparations for past injustices, encouraging dialogue and actionable commitments to Indigenous communities.
