Growing stronger communities

How your support is transforming family farms in Nepal

In the rural region of Jahada, Nepal, most families depend on agriculture for their livelihood and sustenance. Families are relying more and more on growing and eating cash crops like rice, which leaves them struggling to create balanced diets. This, along with outbreaks of pests and the high use of chemical pesticides has threatened the long-term sustainability of small-scale farming in the region. 

You are helping improve food security and nutrition for these vulnerable families. With your generosity backing their efforts, MCC partner, Group of Helping Hands (SAHAS), is training farmers in integrated pest management, seed saving, vermicomposting, seasonal vegetable farming, livestock management and more.

The most vulnerable families receive livestock like pigs, goats and ducks to kick-start their farms. SAHAS is also providing nutritional workshops for parents to learn how to use the produce they have available to achieve a balanced diet for their families.

Restoring hope, one garden at a time

In Haiti, you are helping families recover from disaster

After the 2021 earthquake in Haiti, MCC partner, Institut de Technologie et d’Animation (ITECA), jumped into action supporting 750 people living at the epicenter. The original project focused on supporting farmers whose homes, gardens and livestock were damaged or destroyed by the disaster.

Building on the lessons learned with the first 750 participants, ITECA has now leveraged your compassionate support to champion 350 new families.

One hundred and fifty families are re-establishing agroforestry gardens and 200 families are re-building vegetable gardens to combat rising levels of food insecurity in their community.

Throughout the last year, you have helped 100 farmers (45 women and 55 men) to access seeds, agricultural tools and support with crop planning and monitoring.

“I received seeds of maize, black beans, green beans and eggplant as part of the project implemented by ITECA. I have already harvested the beans for the winter season…. The money I make from my sales helps me pay for my children’s school fees. I am very grateful to ITECA and [MCC] for the support they have given me in this project because this support is very useful to me.”
