A school of their own

Your support is empowering remote communities in India to take the lead on education

In 1998, families from 16 remote villages in the Rayagada district in Odisha, India, came together to create a school rooted in their values. They envisioned
a school that celebrated their indigenous culture, promoted gender equity and taught in the students’ mother tongues along with Odia and Kui.

Throughout the following 25 years, Christian Hospital Bissamcuttack’s Mitra Residential School Kachapaju (CHB-MRSK) has been a beacon of hope for the community. The school provides holistic, community-led education to children who have long faced marginalization and limited access to quality
schooling.

In 2017, MCC partnered with CHB-MRSK. Most recently, in 2025, your generous support has ensured 132 students from Grades 1–5 have the supplies and access they need to learn: textbooks, uniforms, school kits and annual health check-ups. Your support has also empowered six teachers and four support staff with professional development in team-building and innovative teaching practices.

Thanks to your support, the future for these students is looking bright.

Your recent support has reached 132 students like Jagadish Urlaka (left) and Ashish Mahanandia with learning tools like building blocks. (MCC photo/Arup Ghose)

Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city, has been devastated by over a decade of war. War has caused the economy to collapse, destroying 94% of the city’s industry. Unemployment is at a staggering 73.8%, with more than 80% of the population living in poverty.

Thanks to your support, MCC’s partner Christian Hope Center is empowering 115 young Syrians to rebuild their futures.

Here’s a snapshot of the practical ways your support helped from October 2024 to the end of the project in March 2025:

  • 102 students across four different groups participated in English language training.
  • 53 students learned how to use computer programs like Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Students participated in seven workshops on topics like resume writing, public speaking, AI and using LinkedIn.

From the most recent cohort, 18 graduates have already secured stable jobs, with more preparing for interviews. Together with your support, we’re providing Aleppo’s youth with the skills, confidence and hope to create a better future for themselves.
