Haiti TPS (Temporary Protected Status): After much public pressure, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that TPS for more than 58,000 Haitians in the U.S. will be extended by 6 months to January 22, 2018. TPS is typically renewed for 18-month periods and the DHS statement made it clear there is no guarantee the status will be renewed past January.

Refugee and travel ban: Two appeals courts heard arguments on the Trump administration’s refugee and travel ban earlier this month. The Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the injunction against the travel ban. The Ninth Circuit has yet to make its ruling. Read more about the two cases and the real-life consequences of the bans.

Increased criminal prosecutions: In April, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions took steps to increase immigration-related prosecutions (Detention Watch Network analysis in English and Spanish). In May, Sessions issued new policies for federal prosecutors regarding drug crimes.
