Updates and news

In January, President Trump signed three executive orders related to immigration -- one to increase border security, a second calling for increased immigration enforcement and deportations, and a third restricting refugee resettlement and travel to the U.S. Portions of the third order were suspended by a court ruling. The Trump administration is expected to release a new version of that Executive Order in the coming days. On February 20, the Department of Homeland Security released two "implementation memos" detailing how they will carry out the first two orders.

The orders and memos contain very concerning language criminalizing immigrants and extremely troubling provisions regarding the expansion of detention, deportation, and the use of local police for immigration enforcement activities. They also raise serious concerns about due process, protections for asylum seekers, and border militarization. Drafts of three more executive orders leaked to the press indicate more anti-immigrant directives could be coming.
