My spouse and I have had the pleasure of acting as a host family for Débora during her service as an IVEP participant in Québec. The connection with her was especially easy, all the more since Débora is a Portuguese-speaking Brazilian and my spouse is a fluent Portuguese speaker.

We don’t have children and so we really enjoyed the time we spent with her. She would typically come over for a weekend every five or six weeks. She adjusted well to our activities and way of life with good humor. She also spent almost all the Christmas holidays with our families. It was fun to watch her help my wife prepare Christmas pastries. Débora particularly enjoyed playing in the snow, walking in the woods and by the river with us where she took countless pictures of the beautiful landscape in winter. Over all, I hope her time with us helped her gaining a better grasp on the French-Canadian culture.

It was also nice to exchange with her in a variety of subjects, like our faith, her culture, and so on.

I would recommend this experience to anyone who is ready to take care of, sometimes even entertain, a person on a regular basis for almost a year. It is not a small investment; yet it is rewarding in many ways.
