U.S. Capitol building
Like so many of you, we in the Washington Office of MCC U.S. have been adapting to the day-to-day changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. From our home offices or dining room tables, we continue to follow policy, reach out to lawmakers and engage constituents on the issues that are most important to us.
Your support for this work is more important than ever. Congressional offices may also be working from home, but they're still listening for the issues that their constituents care about. Help us remind Congress about the people who are most vulnerable in this global health emergency and advocate for U.S. policies that promote peace and well-being. Please take a moment to take action on at least one of the following:
- Immigration. The United States is still deporting migrants to Guatemala and Honduras, despite obvious health risks. Click here to tell your member of Congress to halt deportations now.
- Criminal justice. Protective measures like social distancing and handwashing can be difficult to implement in jail or prison. Click here to ask your member of Congress to protect incarcerated people by ensuring access to hygiene items and considering compassionate release of elderly incarcerated people.
- Foreign assistance. Refugees and other people who have been displaced from their homes are particularly vulnerable to the spread of COVID-19. The stimulus package contained some funding for these populations but much more will be needed. Click here to ask your member of Congress to support additional funding for international health.
- Sanctions. Restrictive sanctions prevent life-saving medical supplies from entering countries with high rates of COVID-19 infection, leading to death and potential transmission to neighboring countries. Click here to tell your member of Congress to ease sanctions to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Thank you for helping us to express solidarity and compassion in this difficult time.
In Christ,
Rachelle Lyndaker Schlabach and the MCC U.S. Washington Office team
p.s. We wanted to leave you with the words of this prayer that has been circulating on social media. As fear grips our country, let us choose love.
