In Totorani, high in the Andes mountains of Bolivia, German Perez Saénz and his sister Sofia Perez rotate drying maca, a root crop that is native to the region and can sell for several times as much as potatoes. “You need money for food and for your clothes and food education,” says Saénz, a father of five. “With only potatoes we don’t have enough.” MCC is partnering with OBADES, the social development program of the organization of the Bolivian Baptist church to assist farmers in growing maca.
