visiting with an inmate
Luke Roth Mullet

Caring for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated is part of Jesus' call, here inmate Jose Chavez visits with Hesston College student Zenawit Nerae at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility with a group from Offender/Victim Ministries.

The United States is home to 5% of the world’s population and 25% of its prisoners. People of color in the U.S. are incarcerated at disproportionate rates.

MCC Central States is working toward meeting the basic human needs of prisoners and returning citizens by offering two new MCC kit options. Donations of basic hygiene and clothing are welcome for prisoner care kits and returning citizen care kits to help MCC share God’s love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by reminding people that their needs are not forgotten.

MCC is partnering with Offender/Victim Ministries (OVM) in Newton, Kan. to distribute prisoner care kits. OVM Executive Director Libby Schrag explains, “In our current work at Hutchinson Correctional Facility, we routinely hear how much it means to the inmates simply to know that someone is thinking about them. The care kits will provide so much more for the indigent inmates than the products in the kit; they will be a tangible reminder that they are loved and that they matter.”

Connecting with formerly incarcerated men and women to distribute the returning citizen care kits will happen through our partner, Working Men of Christ Ministries (WMCM) in Wichita, Kan.  WMCM works both inside Kansas prisons to offer God’s love and salvation, but also outside the prisons to fill in the gaps for those who are working to re-establish themselves in society. “People want to change, but they need good ground to start from,” said Spencer Lindsay, former inmate and founder of WMCM.  The organization runs four discipleship homes for men and one for women in Wichita. “MCC’s returning citizen care kits will help the men and women at our discipleship houses who are leaving incarceration with nothing but $40.00 or in some cases $100 gate money.  We also have a homeless program in our community where these kits can also be utilized.  We will also distribute the kits to our local jail inmate population leaving incarceration.”

MCC Central States is accepting kit donations at its Material Resource Center in North Newton, Kan. as well as accepting donations to purchase and transport kit items, as needed.

Below are the four different kits we are collecting. Please limit your generousity to the items listed.

Instructions: Kit items will be packed into drawstring bags at MCC. Completed kits can be dropped off or sent to MCC Central States, PO Box 235, 121 E. 30th, North Newton, KS 67117.
