Ask Ontario to protect tenants
If passed, Bill 60 will further harm Ontario's most housing-insecure residents.

As we walk with people living in poverty and respond to the complex challenges they face, we urge the Ontario government to act with dignity and justice through sound policy. We call for provincial policies that prioritize the needs and human rights of the most vulnerable—especially in housing. Unfortunately, Ontario’s new Bill 60: Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act, 2025 will have the opposite effect for many renters across the province.
Canada and Ontario continue to face a long-term affordable housing and homelessness crisis. As MCC Ontario’s Ken Ogasawara notes, “Housing policy… has affected not only all of MCC’s programming in Ontario—from supporting people returning to the community after prison, to resettling newcomers, to walking with people in poverty—but also working professionals, young families, and retirees.” (See Undercurrents - Ep. 24: (un)affordable housing)
In 2024, more than 81,500 Ontarians were homeless—a 25% increase since 2022. Tenants now make up over 80% of food bank users and the Association of Ontario Municipalities warns homelessness could more than triple by 2035 without major intervention.
While no single bill can solve a problem this deep, it should at least avoid worsening it. Sadly, Bill 60 does the opposite. If passed, it will further harm Ontario’s most housing-insecure residents.
The Bill includes provisions that make it easier and cheaper for landlords to evict tenants, while limiting tenants’ ability to challenge unjust evictions. Among other changes, it:
Cuts the required notice period for eviction in half
Restricts the Landlord and Tenant Board’s ability to consider tenant circumstances when delaying an eviction
Lets landlords avoid paying compensation when evicting for personal use
Creates a “bad tenant database” that will effectively blacklist renters and expose personal information publicly
At MCC, we believe this legislation will worsen the housing crisis and increase homelessness across Ontario. Please lend your voice to call for change.
