"And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace." (James 3:18, NRSV)
Each year some people of faith decide to witness for peace by redirecting their war tax dollars to efforts that nurture life, build justice and promote peace.
This is not a simple decision, as Jesus’ call to practice a radical love that includes the enemy clashes with the legal obligation to pay taxes used for war. Withholding taxes from the IRS is illegal and may carry the risk of fines or seizure of property. Yet many have found resisting the payment of taxes for war to be a meaningful way to affirm their commitment to peace in a world where war causes great human suffering.
For those who have made this choice, MCC U.S. provides materials for reflection and personal stories. Each spring MCC U.S. highlights specific MCC programs and giving opportunities through its “Turning toward peace” initiative.
