We are looking forward to hosting you for the MCC Appalachia Reunion 2020 to be held at the Harlan Forestry Camp in Harlan County, Kentucky on Saturday, September 5.  The Forestry Camp is the lodging facility for MCC SWAP Harlan.  (See directions below - do not follow GPS directions.)

Itinerary is as follows:

Breakfast 8 AM

  • Meal provided, donations welcome.

 Morning program 9 AM

  • Update on the MCC Appalachia Program today from current MCC Appalachia staff.
  • Storytelling: Come prepared to share reflections on your time of service in Appalachia. You are welcome to bring memorabilia and pictures to share from your time in Appalachia.

 Lunch 12 noon

  • Meal provided, donations welcome.


  • Free for sight-seeing in the area or visiting with past acquaintances.


  • On your own at a local restaurant of your choice.


For those who are coming a distance and need lodging, there are a variety of options.

  • At the camp: men’s and women’s dorms with bunk beds, bring your own linens.  Suggested donation of $10 per person per night.  You are invited to arrive Friday, September 4, after supper, and depart the following day.  For any other arrival or departure times, please make special arrangements with the Broersmas.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided on September 5.  All other meals are on your own.
  • Quality Inn in Harlan: There are a block of rooms reserved at the rate of $89 per night for reunion participants arriving Friday, September 4, and departing Sunday, September 6.  Must reserve by Friday, August 21, under the name “SWAP”.
  • Other options to check into in Harlan County: Airbnb, Mount Aire Motel, The Little Inn of Harlan, Harlan County Campground & RV (cabins are available as well), Benham Schoolhouse Inn, and Pine Mountain Settlement School.  Since this is Labor Day Weekend, we would suggest making reservations early.

Directions to Harlan

From the west (NW & SW) take I-75 in KY to Corbin, take 25-E to Pineville, and 119
into Harlan.  Turn right at the stoplight and proceed into Harlan on 421.
(Allow 1 ½ hours from Corbin to Harlan)

From the east (SE & NE) take I-81 to Kingsport, then 23 to Duffield VA, 421 to Harlan.
(Allow 2 hours (+) from Kingsport to Harlan.)

Plan to eat supper at a local restaurant in Harlan. Restaurants located along route 421 include: Dairy Hut, Wendys, Rax, McDonalds, Taco Bell, KFC, Panda Garden, Pizza Hut, The Portal (pizza), El Charrito, Sazon Mexican Steak House, Huddle House, Dairy Queen, and Arbys.

Directions to Harlan Forestry Camp

To reach the Harlan Forestry Camp, take 421 north, turn left a ½ mile past Dairy Queen to stay on 421 north.  Proceed up the mountain 3 miles to mile marker 21.  Mac’s Mission will be on your right.  Turn right onto Little Shepherd’s Trail.  This is a narrow and winding road.  There are numerous hairpin turns.  Please drive slowly and carefully.  The camp is nearly 3 miles from Route 421.  There is a “stop” sign at the bottom of our gravel driveway.  Turn left to go up driveway to camp.  If you see the green 3-mile marker, you have passed the camp entrance.

The trip from Harlan to the Forestry Camp should take you 20 minutes.
