Action: Urge your members of Congress to support a "clean" Dream Act

Background: The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program will end on March 5. The DACA program provides protection from deportation and work permits to nearly 700,000 youth and young adults who were brought to the U.S. as children, including many in Mennonite and Brethren in Christ congregations. Thanks to DACA, thousands of have been able to attend college, work legally, and obtain driver’s licenses. Many now have children of their own. (Read Dmarcos’ story.)

The White House has released a long list of demands in exchange for supporting the Dream Act or similar legislation, which include dramatic changes to family migration, increased enforcement, more border walls and the removal of protections for children and families from Central America seeking asylum.

The Dreamer legislation is being paired with fiscal year 2018 budget bills because it is nearly impossible to pass any legislation in the current partisan environment unless it is deemed “must-pass” such as the annual budget. Urge your members of Congress to support a clean Dream Act or other reasonable bipartisan legislation such as the USA Act.

Faith reflection: Ah, you who make iniquitous decrees, who write oppressive statutes, to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right. (Isaiah 10:1-2a)
