Tell Congress and the White House to restore humanitarian assistance to Gaza and call for an end to the blockade.
Background: The dire situation in Gaza has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 health crisis. After more than a decade of isolation and an Israeli-imposed blockade, Gaza is facing “an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.” Ninety-six percent of Gaza’s water is unsafe to drink. Gaza’s two million residents have approximately 12 hours per day of electricity and the economy is near collapse. Half of Gaza’s residents receive emergency food assistance from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
The Fiscal Year 2020 spending bill, signed into law in December 2019, contains much-needed funding for humanitarian projects in the West Bank and Gaza, including UNRWA, but this funding has not yet been released.
Ask your elected officials to:
- Ensure that the funds allocated for Gaza and the West Bank are disbursed immediately
- Call on the Israeli government to fully lift the Gaza blockade
Faith reflection: “O God, whose heart breaks for the world, may your justice dwell in the land, may your righteousness abide in fruitful fields, may the effect of righteousness be quietness and trust forever, may the effect of justice be peace—enduring peace.” –From Prayer for Palestine and Israel
Action: Ask Congress and the White House to restore humanitarian assistance to Gaza and call for an end to the blockade.
