Ask your Member of Congress to sign the letter to President Santos of Colombia, affirming U.S. support for the implementation of the peace accords and the challenges that lie ahead.
Background: The signing of the peace accord in Colombia is scheduled to happen next week. Despite success at the negotiating table, there are many crucial moments ahead that can bolster support for the accords or diminish public trust in the agreement.
As the largest financer of the Colombian military apparatus since the turn of the century, it is essential that the United States expressly support the proper implementation and monitoring of the accords.
Rep. Gallego is circulating a letter in the House this week, calling on members to ensure the U.S. government is now committed to helping Colombia secure peace.
This letter encourages “[the Colombian] government and all relevant parties to ensure that [the accord] is carried out in a manner that promotes the rights of victims of all armed actors and honors their demands for truth and justice.”
Representatives only have until Wednesday, September 21 to sign on so please contact them today!
Faith Reflection: Just as the prophet Isaiah writes of a day when “the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever,” (Isaiah 32:17) we also pray for a rebuilding of trust in a society that has been torn apart by war for so long.
Action: Ask your Member of Congress to sign the letter to President Santos of Colombia to affirm U.S. support for the implementation of the peace accords.
