Over the past two decades, sand dams built with MCC support have brought new life, crops and hope in arid and semi-arid regions of countries including Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique. Through this story map below, produced in 2015, explore how MCC and partners have promoted sand dams.
Today, while some new sand dams are being built in Mozambique and Uganda, MCC partners have shifted their focus to helping rural communities make the best use of available water through training in sustainable conservation agriculture. Farmers continue to benefit from sand dams, as water from the dams extends the growing season of vegetables, providing families with a healthy diet and income for soap, school supplies and other necessities. See the difference water from sand dams can make for Kenyan girls such as 13-year-old Nanteya Mamayio.
