Synopsis: 

The Organization Development Consultant will be working with Non-Government Organizations (NGO) and Community Based Organizations (CBO) in East Africa to strengthen their institutional capacity.

 

Qualifications: 

Committed to the mission of Mennonite Central Committee

Flexibility and willingness to adapt and learn from people as the assignment progresses

Post graduate degree in organizational management or a related field or extensive experience in the area of organizational management and development, organizational design, and institutional building

Experience as an Organizational Developer (OD) practitioner

Knowledge of OD/Organization strengthening tools

Human resources management skills will be an added advantage

Spoken and written Swahili (or a willingness to learn)

Ability and willingness to travel frequently

 

Assignment Description: 

East African Support Unit for NGO’s (EASUN) provides Organizational Development (OD) support to NGO’s in East Africa. EASUN’s commitment is to strengthen the organizational capacities of NGO’s so that they may become more effective actors in development and society.

MCC Tanzania aims to build the capacity of NGOs and CBOs in order to improve their effectiveness and efficiency, so that they can better serve the target group and contribute to their social, economic, and political participation. MCC intends to do this by cooperating with EASUN on the hiring of an Organization Development practitioner who will operate on a 50:50% basis for MCC and EASUN and will be based within EASUN at their headquarters in Arusha. The main task of the Organization Development practitioner will be to equip client organizations with skills in different areas of organizational development; capacity building; institutional set up and institutional building. The OD practitioner will also provide consultancy/advisory services to various other sectors on institutional development, and will work within the aims and objectives of MCC’s strategic plan as well as that of EASUN.

Duties: 

Assess the organizational and institutional set up of client organizations

Design, together with client organizations, new organizational structures

Guide client organizations through a process of organizational change

Equip client organizations with related organizational development skills including strategic planning, thorough training and backstopping

Assist client organizations with proper positioning in their area of operation and towards clients/donors/partners

 

Location Description: 

The Organizational Development Consultant will be based in Arusha, Tanzania. Arusha has a pleasant climate, good medical facilities, and many other amenities. Infrastructure is generally good, although there are frequent electricity blackouts, slow or intermittent internet, and an inadequate transportation infrastructure.

 

Challenges: 

Extensive travel, living in simple, rural conditions while on assignment, and the need to learn fluent Swahili (if not already fluent)
