U.S. Economic Justice

Economic Justice

In the United States, MCC works with low-income communities in diverse places throughout the country – such as the Gulf Coast, Appalachia, Philadelphia and South Dakota.

The experiences of its service workers and partners inform the Washington Office's call for taxpayer dollars to be used less for war and more for nutrition, humanitarian assistance, affordable housing and access to health care.

Public Policy

In Washington, MCC encourages U.S. government officials to increase community involvement, accessibility and federal resources for the following endeavors, which are utilized by many of the people with whom it works:

  • Nutrition/hunger relief,
  • Housing,
  • Access to healthcare,
  • Other programs designed to support communities and individuals.

Stories from the Field

Reflection

Two complementary themes run through the Bible concerning hunger and need. The first is God’s promise to care for us. The second is our responsibility to care for one another. (Isaiah 58:6, Proverbs 31:8-9, Matthew 25:31-40).

Although human conflict and natural disasters cause emergencies, long term poverty is often caused by systemic injustice and powerlessness. If resources were better distributed and the poor had real personal and political power, they could effectively lobby their government for change and care for themselves, and for one another. In the meantime, who will care enough to walk with them and speak on their behalf?

“Faith-based charity provides crumbs from the table; faith-based justice offers a place at the table.” – Bill Moyers
