Like the Israelites in Egypt, many Mennonites were themselves strangers in the United States when they first migrated to this country. God expected the Israelites to show kindness and assist the foreigners when they had settled and became established. So, too, we must show kindness and assist the foreigners now that have settled and become established in this land. MCC U.S. started immigration work because of the needs expressed from Mennonite churches in immigrant communities around the country. As Mennonites reach out, start new churches and incorporate new people in established churches, they discover that some of the "new Mennonites" have been entangled in difficult immigration issues that need to be resolved. MCC U.S. provides information and referrals to those seeking to become legal permanent residents or citizens of the United States. MCC U.S. works to educate constituents about important immigration issues by coordinating educational and resource events in our constituent churches, providing up to date information and resource materials on immigration issues, assisting constituents interested in developing an immigration program, and working with the MCC U.S. Washington Office to promote immigration advocacy. |
