MCC sponsors peace banner across from the UN

The Mennonite Central Committee joined with 21 other religious nongovernmental organizations on July 31, 2006, to mount a banner across the front of the Church Center for the United Nations which read, "End Violence Now — Pursue Peace."

The endorsing NGOs, all of which have offices in The Church Center for the UN, decided that they needed to raise their voice to encourage the UN Security Council to call for an immediate cease fire in the war in Lebanon.

Following the unfurling of the banner, the group proceeded into the Chapel of the Church Center for the UN to hold an interfaith service on "End Violence Now — Pursue Peace" which included reading first-hand accounts of the suffering in Lebanon and Israel, readings from the United Nations Charter and the Convention on the Rights of the Child followed by silent prayer, meditation and mourning.
