Pine Mountain Overlook Area Culture & Recreation
There are several cultural and recreationalopportunities in the Harlan area for groups who wish to know more about Appalachia, or simply to enjoy the outdoors during free time.
Martin's Fork LakeA man-made lake with a sand beach, swimming, picnicking, and bluegrass music entertainment on Wednesdays. From camp: 45 minutes. Kingdom Come State ParkSome of the most extraordinary rock formations in KY can be seen in the park. Enjoy hiking, pedal boating, miniature golfing, and picnicking. The park is also black bear habitat. From camp: 45 minutes. Knobby Rock in Blanton State ForestNestled on Pine Mountain, this is Kentucky’s oldest growth forest. Hike to Knobby Rock for spectacular views via 4-mile loop trail. From camp: 30 minutes. Cumberland Gap National ParkThe dominant feature is the 800 ft. gap known as the Wilderness Road through which pioneers trekked westward. Enjoy the visitor center, interpretive programs, and hiking trails. Don’t miss Pinnacle Peak! From camp: 90 minutes. Cumberland Falls State Resort ParkThis 125-foot curtain of mist drops 60 feet in the beautiful gorge on the Cumberland River. Enjoy hiking, rafting, horseback riding in the park. From camp: 90 minutes. Little Shepherd TrailThe 38-mile scenic mountain road meanders along the crest of Pine Mountain, looking much like it did when John Fox, Jr. penned his famous novel “The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come.” The SWAP Camp is located on the Trail. Pine Mountain Settlement SchoolHistoric boarding school now hosts environmental and cultural studies. Square dancing is popular on most Thursday evenings. From camp: 45 minutes. The Kentucky Coal Mining MuseumHoused in the former International Harvester Company Store, The Kentucky Coal Mining Museum offers a view into the evolution of the coal mining industry in Eastern Kentucky. From Camp: 40 minutes. Barbourville Recreation and Water ParkThe Park offers a water slide, lazy river, swimming, paddle boats, putt-putt golf, playgrounds, ball fields, picnic shelters and walking track. From camp: 1 hour. Natural Tunnel State Park (VA)A geologic wonder in nature with evidence of prehistoric life and fossils. Swimming, hiking, interpretive programs and picnicking available. From camp: 90 minutes.
