Welcome to our Elkhorn SWAP headquarters,located at a former coal baron's mansion in the heart of McDowell County, an area where many have suffered severe economic and personal hardship with the transformation of the mining industry and with 2 major floods in recent years.
The Elkhorn House is a wonderful piece of history, owned by a local MCC partner called SAFE (Stop Abusive Family Environments, Inc.), who allows SWAP to use the property as a home base for ministry. The SAFE partnership works very well, with SWAP providing volunteer labor and SAFE providing building materials for housing rehabilitation. It is fulfilling to know that the homes that volunteers are improving will provide safe, warm & dry homes for people who deal with their difficult situations. Working at the Elkhorn location gives volunteers an intensive week of insight into the place we call Appalachia.
