MCC in South AfricaAfrica MCC partners with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in a project that helps refugees arriving and settling in Durban, South Africa, in areas including housing, education, vocational training and access to social services. In Eastern Cape Province, the poorest province in South Africa, MCC through its Global Family Sponsorship Program provides assistance to preschools. A Global Family project in Johannesburg focuses on the plight of orphans and children with HIV/AIDS. In the Katorus area of Johannesburg, MCC works with community health workers and local services in providing comprehensive HIV/AIDS care. A project in Soweto offers counseling and home-based care for HIV/AIDS patients. Another project serves HIV/AIDS patients in rural Zululand. South Africa also serves as a base for MCC’s regional peace work in Africa, which includes trainings in peace-building for pastors and church leaders. The South Africa MCC office provides a base for work in peace-building and human rights in Lesotho and HIV/AIDS and peace-building work in Swaziland. |
