Comprehensive Poverty Reduction Plan NeededThanks to the efforts of many people across Ontario, the Provincial Government has promised to develop a comprehensive poverty reduction strategy. Now it is important to let the government know that you want them to follow through on their commitment.
BackgroundIn July, the Government concluded a process of community consultations to get public input on the plan. Thousands of people across the province participated in this process either by attending consultation meetings or by submitting their ideas by e-mail, letter or phone. Minister Deb Matthews, who is taking the lead on the poverty reduction strategy, is scheduled to release her report by December. With a slowing economy, Premier McGuinty has already suggested the government is prepared to cut funding in everything but health and education in order to balance the provincial budget. The Government needs to hear from Ontarians like you, that poverty reduction remains a priority. Tough economic times are all the more reason to create a comprehensive poverty reduction strategy.
