Mennonite Disaster Service and Mennonite Central Committee partnership in Hurricane Katrina responseSeptember 7, 2005 "Mennonite congregations in and near Hurricane Katrina affected areas are following Christ's call to care for their neighbors by organizing local resources to respond to the needs emerging. These congregations have invited MDS and MCC to help coordinate the response from the wider church."
Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) and Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) are sister organizations representing the Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches in Canada and the United States in disaster response. MDS conducts domestic disaster response in Canada and the U.S. while MCC focuses on international disaster response. Because of the enormity and diverse response needed for Hurricane Katrina, MDS has requested that MCC assist them in making material resources and emergency supplies available where MDS makes a request within the hurricane damage zone. MDS continues to support and express appreciation to Mennonite churches in the hurricane damage zone that are supporting, coordinating and hosting MDS volunteers. MDS has also asked MCC to support U.S. Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches responding to the relocation of evacuees outside the hurricane damage zone. Both MDS and MCC are continuing to accept donations for Hurricane Katrina. MCC continues to accept financial donations designated for "Hurricane Katrina" to support these two initiatives and other needs identified by MDS and the U.S. Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches. MCC is also accepting material resource donations to replenish emergency supplies already shipped to the hurricane damaged area. MDS continues to accept donations - over $1,000,000 (USD) to date in the U.S. and $172,000 (Cdn) in Canada - to support the short- and long-term rebuilding and restoring of communities within the hurricane damage zone. MCC will work with MDS to explore other areas of partnership as this major response unfolds. MDS established three bases of operation one week after Katrina hit — Mobile. Ala. and Meridian and Gulfport, Miss., - and are beginning clean-up work with chainsaw crews from neighboring states. Further exploration at Bayou la Batre, Ala. and in Louisiana and New Orleans is being carried out by an MDS investigative team over the next week.
