Shop owner Ruth Padilla counting money with volunteers Alyssa and Ashley DeLaVega. Beauty salon supports hurricane relief
October 5, 2005 Spanky's and Company, a beauty salon in Reedley, California, raised $1,791 U.S. for MCC's Hurricane Katrina response. The salon invited other local beauty shops to participate in their cut- and pedicure-a-thon Sunday, Sept. 18. Ruth Padilla, owner of Spanky's and Co., reported that 12 of their shop's hair stylists and manicurists participated in the all-day event, and another six stylists from other shops toted in their supplies and took a shift at the styling booths. Spanky's charged $20 for a haircut, $20 for a pedicure, and $10 each for a nail polish or 10-minute massage and had patrons write their checks directly to MCC. Patron ranged in age from preschooler Davin Arakaki who climbed on his mother's back in the massage chair to get in on her massage, to 94-year-old Art Bergthold who came for a pedicure after reading the announcement in his church bulletin at Reedley First Mennonite Church. |
