Global Family Student in Colombia. Disenfranchised People
In Colombia, the Coalition for Conscientious Objection (CCO) is a group who seek to influence public policies affecting the development of favorable post-conflict conditions for people. Teaching nonviolence and conscientious objection, the CCO works with schools, youth groups, churches and social organizations. The CCO seeks to support children and youth that are fleeing pressures to join armed groups as well as those who have left these groups. They hope to provide a safe place for children to attend school, avoid forced recruitment and provide psychological and emotional healing for those leaving armed groups. While this program can only attend to a limited number of children, estimates say that there are around 8000 child soldiers in Colombia. Global Family sponsor funds help CCO to provide formal and non-formal education through payment of tuition, school supplies, transportation, personal hygiene supplies, uniforms, etc. to these vulnerable children and youth. The funds also provide emergency support to children in critical situations—a safe place for them to live. |
