Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Is it possible to write to the sponsored individual or group?

    Letter to a sponsored child.

    Letter to a sponsored child.

We encourage sponsors to send a colorful card, photo of themselves, or a short letter to their sponsored project/individual. A general size guideline is a business-size (#10) envelope. Translation of long letters takes a great deal of valuable time and energy on the part of in-country personnel, most of whom are volunteers. Small gifts, such as stickers, so that they can be shared, or bookmarks for a special occasion like a birthday, are also appropriate.

All correspondence is sent through either the Canadian or American Global Family offices. At the request of in-country personnel helping to administer the Global Family Program, no addresses are given to sponsors or sponsored students.

It is also our policy not to send large gifts and extra funds. The gift given through regular sponsorship is already most generous and appreciated.

  4. How much information does the sponsor receive?

When you become a sponsor of a Group Assistance project, you receive an initial fact sheet about the country and the project. Semi-annual reports keep you updated on the project and the people of the community with whom you are linked.

When you become a sponsor of an Individual Assistance student, you receive an initial case history of the person and annual updates about the individual or community in which he/she lives. Attempts are made by in-country staff to have sponsored students send Christmas cards, though this is not always possible.

  5. Why does the Global Family Program emphasize support for group assistance sponsorships?

Group assistance strengthens the foundation of family and community life. It maximizes the use of funds, helping more people. Group projects are more efficient in administration and personnel, both for in-country MCC offices and local projects.
