BACKGROUND: The number of unaccompanied children coming to the U.S. from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala has doubled each year since 2011. It is estimated that more than half are fleeing violence related to gangs and local drug cartels. Since October 2013, more than 57,000 unaccompanied children have arrived, and thousands more have come with one or both parents.

This is a regional humanitarian crisis, not a U.S. immigration enforcement problem. Since 2008 asylum requests by Hondurans, Salvadorans and Guatemalans seeking refuge in neighboring countries has increased by 712%. The current crisis demands both a short-term humanitarian response and, for the long-term, policies to address complex root causes. Unfortunately, the response from President Obama and members of the U.S. Congress focuses primarily on strengthening enforcement, detaining more families, and deporting children more quickly.

FAITH REFLECTION: In Matthew 18:3-5, Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.” (Matthew 18:3-5) How we respond to the current crisis will demonstrate how well we are living out Jesus’ teachings to welcome children and immigrants.
