Action: Send a letter to the White House urging President Obama to end deportations.

Background: Each day, approximately 1100 immigrants are deported from the U.S. Many of those deported leave daughters and sons, mothers and fathers, and sisters and brothers behind. This is causing enormous emotional suffering and economic hardship in many of our communities. Deportations have increased under the Obama administration and, though the president says he is prioritizing the deportation of those who pose a danger to their communities, the vast majority have no criminal convictions. Later this month or in early March, we will reach two million deportations under President Obama’s watch.

Faith reflection: Scripture is clear about how we should treat the migrant among us. Leviticus 19:33-34 says that “When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien. The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” Furthermore, Matthew 25 emphasizes that how we treat (or mistreat) a migrant is how we treat Jesus himself.
