Somalia
About SomaliaYears of civil strife have made it difficult to come up with reliable health data for Somalia. HIV infection rates in Somalia appear to be lower than rates in surrounding countries, likely due to years of isolation. As borders become more open and refugees return from outside the country, Somalia faces the threat of increased HIV transmission.
MCC Supports:Family Economic and Relief Organization (FERO)In an attempt to provide a source of consistent and reliable information, FERO runs an HIV/AIDS Resource Center in the capital city of Mogadishu. The center provides detailed education and resources on HIV/AIDS and the dangers of female circumcision. Community members and groups are welcome to come to the center to pick up information and interact with staff members who are available to answer questions and provide further support to visitors. The center welcomes more than 150 individuals and groups each month. Center trainers also take information out into the community, providing education in schools, markets, and military camps. To reach out to community youth, a basketball program is provided at the center. $114 Cdn./$100 U.S. per month covers the expense of outreach sessions to schools, military camps, and other groups. $228 Cdn./$200 U.S. funds the publication of a bi-monthly newsletter on HIV/AIDS. If contributions to a project exceed the amount needed, MCC will use the donations to support similar projects. |
