International Women's DayInternational Women's Day (March 8) was established by the United Nations to provide an opportunity to reflect on the progress made to advance women's equality, to assess the challenges facing women, to consider future steps to enhance the status of women, and to celebrate the gains made in these areas. This year, Canadians celebrate International Women's Week from Sunday, March 7 to Saturday, March 13, 2004. The Canadian theme for this year is "She's on a Role!" This theme encourages Canadians to take a closer look at the accomplishments toward promoting gender equality. Celebrations for International Women's Day in the United States are a project of the YWCA in the United States.
Sisters in SpiritMarch 2004 also marks the beginning of the Sisters in Spirit Campaign by the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC). The campaign that calls us to reflect and take action on the very serious issue of missing Aboriginal women in Canada. In October 2003, NWAC President Terri Brown spoke of the staggering reality. Over the past 20 years, approximately 500 Aboriginal women have gone missing, disappeared, or been murdered in communities across Canada. The church is challenged to support Aboriginal women in their struggle to live.
